Gitmob – Doom Diver Catapult

First up we have the Doom Diver Catapult, a blast from the past reinvented for Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

Gamers of a certain vintage will remember the Doom Diver from Warhammer Fantasy (And it also makes an appearance in Warhammer The Old World) as a Goblin artillery unit that flung goblins with wing like gliders to act like a guided rock lobber! In AOS it works a little differently, but is still a very cool ranged unit that has the potential to do spikes of damage

The model was great fun to build up, and actually has a couple of different assembly options – you can build it with the Git ready to launch, or like I built it with him flying through the air! Both options are fun, and certainly gives you a bit of variety if you opt to build a couple of them. While they are potentially a little swingy, I like the idea of taking 3 or 4 of them in a pure Gitmob army and using them to pepper high armour targets to get around the army’s lack of rend.

It was enjoyable to paint up too, but I’d highly recommend using sub assemblies here as otherwise it can be a little difficult to get to all the detail! I left all the crew separate (Including the hammer wielding Snotling) and left the main assembly not stuck to the base – This is because if you stick it to the base during assembly you’re going to find it very hard to paint all the lower beams on the contraption and it’s going to be tricky to get your brush into the beast that is pulling it.

I used a fairly limited palette to match the Gitmob units I’d already painted from the Army Set, and this fits in really nicely alongside them!

From a price point of view, the Doom Diver costs £65 – which while a little higher than I thought it would be, I still feel isnt too bad for a centrepiece model that you’re probably only going to have a couple of max. I think I’ll certainly be picking up at least one more, as I think when they do well they are going to really cause a headache, especially given their ability to trade rend for re rolls.

Snarlboss on War Wheela / Frazzlegit Shaman

The second kit we’re looking at today is the Snarlboss on War-Wheela, which also optionally builds the Frazzlegit Shaman. Both of these are brand new character choices for the Gloomspite Gitz, with the first able to move across units to cause mortal damage, while also buffing Steela Wheelas and allowing them to fight immediately after him – which is a nice little combo.

Alternatively, the Shaman is a combination of a wizard and an odd anti shooting device that makes all models within 6″ of the Shaman (other than the Shaman himself) untargetable for shooting. While this does tend to make the Shaman paint a massive sun shaped target on his chest, it does give your other units a turn’s protection so that they can get into position, plus the Shaman can zap 3 nearby units with Mortal Wounds too!

I opted to build this one as the Shaman, as I loved the hilarious concept of it! I’m not sure if its maybe the most competitive use of this kit, but it is absolutely the most fun option!

Building and painting was easy, and if you’ve built the Steela Wheelas then you’ll know what to expect here – while they are different chariots (And this character chariot is larger too) a lot of the assembly methods and textures to paint are very similar across both – If you’ve done the chariots out of the Army Set then you’ll have no issues here!

I would normally wholeheartedly recommend this one as a kit to pick up 2 of in order to expand the contents of the army set if not for one factor – It’s very expensive…

The RRP of this kit is £61.50 which is almost the cost of a Horus Heresy Thantar Siege-Automata, a much larger model that feels like you’re getting more for your money. Yes, people are probably not buying multiples of this kit, but I do feel £40ish would have felt a little more value for money. A lot of people probably had wanted to buy two boxes in order to build both characters, but at £123 for 2 models at about 170 points each seems a little on the steep side for me. This is a real shame because it’s one of my favourite models in the range, especially with the Grom the Paunch vibes that the Snarlboss gives – my gut just says this one is priced a tad too high for my liking.

Despite the price tag, I do love the kit and had an absolute ball building and painting this one up – and I do hope the pricing we’ve been given is a typo.

Summary

So what do I think of the new additions to the Gitmob range? Well they are both cracking models that round out the Gitmob subfaction into it’s own glorious niche of wolf mounted insanity!

Yes, I have some price gripes, but the models are fantastic and have a well deserved place in your collection – I kind of hope that these models end up in a Battleforce Set, as I feel that would lessen the sticker shock of the character a little and I think a full Gitmob force would look glorious on the tabletop

We’ve gotten some brilliant new models as part of this wave of Gloomspite Gitz, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the rest of the races of the Mortal Realms!

The new Gitmob kits (Along with the kits first available in the Army Set) are available to pre order today and are released on Saturday 22nd March
