The Fane of Nyrro strike from the shadows in the latest release for Warmachine. Ancient vampiric Elves who have forsaken their gods for immortality, these creatures have an eternal hunger that fuels them as they lead their Warbeasts to battle across the Iron Kingdoms.

Fane of Nyrro – Executioner’s Toll
First up for the Fane of Nyrro we have the Executioner’s Toll box!
Out 23rd June with an RRP of £74.99 (or £67.49 from Element Games) this is a great core set containing your Warlock and the core units needed to make up a 30 point Command level force – from this you can add more units to make a force usable for larger sized games
If you’ve picked up any of the two player starter sets you may be used to plastic kits, but these models (Like much of the Warmachine range) are resin – and I have to say the quality is far better than some of the earlier Cryx models I’ve previously seen. These are commercially 3D printed, but have a nice flex to them which means that they won’t shatter into a million pieces when they are dropped, and have a really nice finish to them. I did have a little flash and some supports to remove, but on the whole the models were really clean and went together nicely! You’ll want to use superglue to put these together, but outside of Sybaris and the Strygon rider they are mostly one piece and just need sticking to their bases!
Being resin they have a nice weight to them when built and look gorgeous. Scale is a little bigger than other games you might be used to, and they are really nice to paint up. These are ancient vampire elves, with suitably aged looking armour and horrific gribbly monsters accompanying them to battle, which is a nice change in aesthetic to some recent Warmachine releases. It’s great that you can have more comic looking units such as the Southern Kriels fighting off against darker forces such as the Dusk, and it adds some nice variety to the forces that you can pick up!
So let’s take a look at the models
First up we have the Warlock that leads the warband – Hysene
She was great fun to paint up – For this box I wanted to lean into a more Grimdark style, with aged armour and unnatural purple skin while still keeping the spot colours of red to drive home that these are vampires. The Fane of Nyrro have an interesting mechanic where they generate Hunger – this hunger can be spent on abilities that are unlocked for all your Eldritch models. This can include things such as spending hunger to make additional melee attacks, or even use it as a get out of jail card to teleport your warlock to a friendly model when they are hit – this removes the chosen model from the game, but keeps your precious Warlock safe. Not that Hysene is squishy, she’s a pretty capable Warlock that can lead from the front with decent defences.
Next in the box is Sybaris
This is a character Warbeast who is very quick and perfect at picking off stray targets. It’s not the hardest hitting Warbeast, but can work as a Hunger generator, gaining hunger points when it removes a model from play (this hunger can be spent by anyone in the force, which is a nice mechanic!). In addition, with it’s Echolocation ability it can even charge targets that it doesnt have line of sight too, making this a great threat to have lurking around models that are trying to hide. What’s more, the entire force gets to get the benefit from this too, so it can set up out of line of sight charges from other models too
The Strygon Rider is a decent Solo mounted upon a horrific Strygon. Leaning into the fact that you have an argressive Warlock here, the Rider gets +3 ARM while within 10″. It’s quick and flies too, making it another good threat unit. The model is absolutly gorgeous and really leans into that horror vibe that the army has.
We get a unit of Fane Knights in the box – and these are really nice models – as ever each model in the unit has a unique sculpt and they paint up really nicely. There’s lots of really nice textures here so you can go to town painting them, but equally the detail isnt too fussy if you just want these on the battlefield quickly too!
Finally, the box contains the Sythyss Prophet, an attachment that works really well with the Fane Knights. She has an ability that allows you to return a slain model – which comboes nicely with the Hunger ability that kills one when the warlock is in danger. Again it’s a gorgeous model that paints up really nicely.
Strygon, Light Warbeast
Costing £34.99 is the Strygon, a light warbeast for the warband
As with most Warmachine models, you get all the various head and weapon options here. What’s really nice is that these all have pre drilled magnet holes so you can swap the different options out between games
I’ve painted up one of the options for this review, and it’s a nice vicious little thing on a 40mm base. I kind of wish it was on a slightly bigger base, as one of the wings overhangs a little – but the base difference gives it a nice split between this and the next model we’re looking at…
Vordak Heavy Warbeast
With an RRP of £39.99, the Vordak is a Heavy Warbeast option for the Fane of Nyrro
This kit again comes with a stack of parts allowing you to swap your equipable options on the fly.
Again this one has a really nice horror look to it and was fun to paint up! From a rules point of view this one has some pretty nice abilities such as Home Back allowing it to advance back towards it’s commander after it Frenzies!
I really enjoyed painting up these models and can’t wait to try them out on the battlefield! What’s really nice here is that if you pick up all three of these boxes you actually have enough to put together a 50 point Skirmish force. Steamforged have been really good at putting together boxes that can be put together to make legal forces without players needing to pick up single model blisters, really making it easier to jump into the game.
Warmachine has been going from strength to strength and I can’t wait to see what we have coming up next!
These kits are currently available for pre order and are released on Tuesday 23rd June
