So first things first, this is another ace Christmas model! I’ve been a big fan of Games Workshop’s festive models, and the last few Red Gobbo figures have been great fun to work on. Now if i’m being particularly critical, then maybe it’s time to mix things up with a different character, perhaps get The White Dwarf to return to the world of special miniatures?

That aside, this is a fun model however – With Da Red Gobbo tossing some grenades inside snowballs and the snowman behind him hiding an explosive surprise.

As you’d imagine, this is just a single frame – and this goes together really easily. I assembled the whole model as a single assembly, but you can probably get to the details a little easier if you do it in a few sub-assemblies. For exampe, Da Red Gobbo and his little goblin friend as seperate pieces, and then assemble the base and the snowman, This will make it easier to get to some of the details that would otherwise be obscured a little when built. I did stick it all together though, and had no issues really getting to it!

Once built it was time to paint him up, and progress was pretty quick! Like with some of the previous models this was a bit of a palette cleanser, and a nice little thing to work on between other projects.

It does have some molded snow texture, but to really add to the festive vibe I decided to use Valhallan Blizzard on the snow and the snowman itself. I found that this have it a bit of a glitter of real snow, and a bit of variety in the white of the model (there is a lot of snow and fur here, so a bit of variation helps!)

Another cool touch is the fact that you can leave the snowman’s head seperate so that you can remove it to reveal the bomb underneath! While this will be tricky to show off while in the display cabinet, it’s a nice little feature of the model. There might be less easter eggs than on previous xmas models, but this went together really well and was great fun to paint up!

Summary

So what do I think of Da Red Gobbo’s A-Bomb-Inable Snowman? I’ve been a big fan of Games Workshop’s festive models, having painted up the last few years worth, and it’s something I look forward to working on every year.

The model is fun, enjoyable to paint and goes together really easily, but I feel that next year we maybe need something other than Da Red Gobbo to mix things up a little. Sylvaneth Christmas tree maybe? Sisters of Battle Carol singers? There’s lots of fun stuff they could do, and I feel we’re starting to exhaust what we can do with Da Red Gobbo! This set is still well worth picking up though – maybe try sticking it in a transparent bauble and adding to your Christmas tree!
