Cities of Sigmar Wave 2 of models is finally here, expanding out the Cities range! We’ve checked out the brand new Battletome in our full review which you can see right here, but in this article we are checking out Cities of Sigmar Wave 2, building up and painting the new models to see what they look like in the flesh and having a chat about the build experience. We also check out the Cogfort in a separate post which you can find here, and chat a little about how to paint it up.
Massive thanks to Games Workshop for sending us these over to check out on the site. If you would like to support the site then why not order your Cities of Sigmar Wave 2 models through our affiliate Element Games and save yourself some money too?
We’ve also filmed full unboxings of both the full Cities of Sigmar range and the Cogfort itself which you can see just below or over on YouTube
So without further ado let’s check out the new Cities of Sigmar kits
Gate Gargants
First up we have the Gate Gargants (RRP £64.50)
This was a really fun kit to put together – It’s basically a unit of two Gargants, each equipped with a massive shield! Each Gargant has a gunner sat in a crows nest, as a nice scaled up version of the Ogor Warhulk! There’s some really nice little details here such as the female one only having 3 fingers and toes but the male one having 4.
They were very fun to paint, but I decided to do them in a number of subassemblies to make like a little easier. The arm holding the shield slots into a socket, so left that as a seperate part. Equally I kept the gunner lose as he just slots into a pin in the top of the crows nest.
One thing to keep an eye on is the shoulder armour. In the instructions it shows to build them as I have in the models above, but on the box art they actually put this armour on the side not covered by the shield (Which does seem to make a little more sense) – By the time I’d clocked this they had set, but it’s no biggie and looks good either way!
The models are quite impressive built up, and stand pretty tall compared to the Cogfort – They are also pretty fun in game and I feel make a good pick to add some muscle to your army.
Erasmus Zonn
Next up we have the new named Wizard Erasmus Zonn. RRP £42.50
I really like this model – With all of the old Warhammer Fantasy models being removed from the range this is kind of a re-imagining of the old battle wizard on two headed griffon. Now I’m not sure what exactly he is riding, its a weird goat, bird, horse, snake… thing! It makes a good Age of Sigmar take on a Chimera though, and has a similar vibe to the mount that Tahlia has.
He’s not the biggest model, and I do think he is a little pricey for £42, but it is a really fun one to paint – if a little fiddly. I didn’t end up doing any sub assemblies for this one, but if I was to do it again i’d try and make sure I could remove Zonn himself, just to make it easier to paint! Getting the Blue/White scheme of the mount was a little tricky, and I ended up using thinned blue contrast to get it to sit between the feathers to give it a little more depth to it.
Aqshian Pyrocaster
Next up we have the Fire Mage re-imagining, the Aqshian Pyrocaster. £25
This is another really cool model with a lot of movement to it. I really like that the model is posed midway through casting a spell, with a big trail of flames following the sweep of his staff – it works really well and looks ace on the finished model
I would recommend building the wizard but not sticking him to the base – That arc of flames really gets in the way and can be a paint to try and get around – it’s much easier to just attach that to the base and him to a painting handle. Once it’s all painted you can then easily stick him together.
Amethyst Knellmage
Cities of Sigmar Wave 2 has another mage, this time a death one – the Amethyst Knellmage. £25
This is another cracking model – One of my favourite details are the clockwork skeletons that are ringing his helmet like a bell. You can opt to build him with this open or closed, but I love his facial expression with this open so built him that way!
Out of all the models in this wave, this is probably the easiest to build as you don’t really need any subassemblies to get to all the details! He just looks really cool too!
Dawner’s Triumph
Joining the Cities of Sigmar in this wave is also a new terrain piece, the Dawner’s Triumph. RRP £40
This is a really nice terrain piece with a lot of detail to it! You actually get a load of candles, coins, scrolls and various relics to pop on this monument, and I only used a small number on the one I built – If you wanted to you could go absolutly to town with covering this thing with a load of candles and make this look as over the top as possible! Equally if you don’t use many of the bits then you have a sprue perfect for adding a Cities of Sigmar theme to any scenery (or perhaps to add to some Necromunda Cawdor models!)
It’s also massive, standing as tall as a Cogfort (which is also as tall as a Mega gargant!) Just watch the chains at the bottom, it’s tricky to work out exactly how they fit without some trial and error dry fitting them until they click into place.
Joining these kits are 4 kits we’ve already reviewed in our look at City of Ash
Jorvan Kreel is £29
Forge Priest is £25
Grenadiers are £36
Gallants are £37
All great kits, but some savings to be had if you can find a copy of City of Ash out in the wild! Check out our full City of Ash for our full deep dive into that too!
Obviously this wave is also joined by a massive centerpiece, the Cogfort which you can read about in our full review and painting guide!
Cities of Sigmar Wave 2 is an amazing collection of models, and it’s great to see the range grow into it’s own identity from it’s early Warhammer Fantasy mixed range of kits!
All these models are up for pre order today and are released Saturday 30th May
Games Workshop provided Sprues & Brews with free copies for review purposes.
