Ciaphas Cain and a duo of tanks are up for pre order today for the Astra Militarum. In this full unboxing and review we’ll be taking a look at all the kits, painting them up and seeing what they look like in the flesh.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the new releases and check them out!

Ciaphas Cain

First up we have the legendary Commissar Ciphas Cain, hot from the pages of the Black Library! Costing £29.50 this is a limited edition set that is only available while stocks last.

This is a really nice set with Cain being able to be built on a scenic base alongside Jurgen, or they can both be based separately. Like a lot of these limited edition sets, the integrated base comes on the sprue – From a rules point of view it doesn’t matter which base you put him on, which is nice! I kept them separate so I can use Jurgen as an alternate melta model – but it is nice that there’s no “wrong” way to build them

Speaking of rules, Games Workshop have created some legends rules for the model – which makes sense given this is only available for a short time, and you could always use him as a regular commissar if you wanted to, but I know some will be disappointed that there are not any matched play rules for him.

I really enjoyed painting him up! I decided to give Ciaphas Cain a similar look to my other Commissars with a gloss leather jacket and trench style base, with Jurgen painted up to match my wider Death Korps of Krieg army.

This is another nice model to add to the collection and well worth picking up!

Hippogriff ATV & Centaur RSV

Alongside Ciaphas Cain there’s also a couple of models that are making their first stand alone appearance since the recent Astra Militarum Armageddon set.

We’ve seen both of these before, but this is the first time you are able to pick up these kits outside of the box.

Price wise they are a tad more than I was expecting with the Hippogriff at £38.50 and the Centaur transport at a pretty expensive £42.50

This is quite a lot more than I was expecting, but they are gorgeous models. For this review I painted up both of them to match my Krieg army, and there’s some nice things I didn’t notice in our original review. For starters, the sprues for the transport actually contain the side paneling used for the character varient – for my army I decided to use this, as I feel that it made sense to try and stop the mud and dust from use in trench environments.

For the Hippogriff I went for a more anti infantry build, but as mentioned in our previous review this is a really easy model to make modular. You can simply push in the weapons and swap them between games, which is very cool!

Despite them being a little pricey, I still like these vehicles. They add a lot of variety to the Astra Militarum range especially if you have a tank heavy army!
