The Helsmiths of Hashut exploded onto the scene with their recent Army Set and Battletome, but today the rest of the Helsmiths range is up for pre order, ready to expand your armies. In this full unboxing and review we’ll be checking out all of the kits, seeing how they go together and painting them up to see what they look like in the flesh!
Massive thanks to Games Workshop for sending us these kits over a little early to check out on the site! If you would like to support the site then why not pick up your Age of Sigmar goodies through our affiliate Element Games and save yourself some money too?
We’ve also filmed a full unboxing and review which you can see just below or over on YouTube
So without further ado let’s check out the brand new Hashut releases!
Helsmiths of Hashut Unboxing and Review
After the initial Army Set, there was a surprisingly large assortment of kits that still needed models, and today all of those sets (along with the ones that first appeared in the army set) all go up for pre order!
We’re going to be looking at each of these sets in order, and chatting a little about how they build and what it was like to paint them
First up we have the Daemonsmith kit (£25), which can also be used to build an Ashen Elder. This is a surprisingly packed sprue that has loads of bits, and I reckon if you have a spare War Despot you could probably kitbash this with the spare parts in order to build the hero that you didn’t go for.
As I already have an old Warhammer World exclusive Daemonsmith I decided to build this one up as the Ashen Elder. The unit is really helpful in game and the model looks great! I do think the Daemonsmith is the most interesting build out of the two, but the two builds are distinct enough to make picking up two boxes worth it for covering the heroes in your army
I still have most of the sprue intact with the Daemonsmith parts, so will keep my eye open for a suitable body to use as conversion fodder!
Next up we have the big centrepiece of the range Urak Taar, the First Daemonsmith (Which can also be built as a regular Daemonsmith) RRP £98
This is one of the kits I’d been really looking forward to and I was not disappointed when it arrived! One of the things I had been toying with was which of the two builds to go for – but this kit is very easy to use as both of the units! Build the Taurus in full and then build both of the heroes and you can simply blutac them in place in order to swap between them! No magnets needed, and the daemonic smoke from Urak Taar has a little locator that helps it clip to the wing even when using tacking the model in place.
I really enjoyed painting this one up, and the fact i could use both heroes is a real bonus here!
You could actually choose to put the Daemonsmith on a base if you wanted to use him on foot, but you actually get enough spare parts to build a 3rd Daemonsmith on foot if you have a spare Despot body.
As Games Workshop had sent us over another War Despot I decided to use him as the basis of a Daemonsmith on foot using all the spare parts from the kit, and bar some minor gap filling they went together really easily! I highly recommend doing this with the spare parts if you have perhaps picked up two army sets!
One of the strongest units in the Helsmiths of Hashut Battletome are the Infernal Razers (£29.50). They may have no rend base, but juice them up with Daemonic power and they can be as tough as rend 3 which is ideal for punching through loads of units!
The kit contains 5 models that can be built with either weapon loadout and these are really easy to put together. I’m already eagerly anticipating the full release so that I can pick up another box of them, as I feel units of 10 are going to be very very strong in the right army list.
Another popular unit in the Helsmiths Battletome are the Bull Centaurs (£40). This is another duel kit that also builds a unit of Anointed Sentinels. Interestingly, you can actually build the lower half of the model and build both tops in their entirety meaning that you could magentise or use blutac to swap between the two builds. While I was tempted to do this, in the end I’ll be picking up another couple of boxes so that I can build a full unit of each loadout.
I love most of the Helsmiths range, but this again is one of my favourite kits. They just look so so good when painted up and I really hope that we get a hero in this style at some point. Forge World previously did Shartar the Executioner, so theres a good chance that we see a similar style model in a future wave. I built this first box as the standard Bull Centaurs, but opted for a darker scheme than the box art as felt this reminded me more of the classic Chaos Dwarf schemes.
The final set in this release are the Hobgrot Vandalz (£38.50), the cheap and cheerful cannon fodder for the Helsmiths, who have proved to be really really useful in my games so far. I was expecting a box of 10, but you actually get 20 here, which is enough to build 2 minimum units. You get full command for each 10 models meaning you can build them in whichever combination you want.
I opted to build these as 2 units of 10 and painted them up to match the wider Helsmiths army by matching some of the dark bronze colours just to tie them all together. These are just seen as cannon fodder by the rest of the army, so I felt just dark leather colours and metals here saving the purple spot colour just for the banner.
I was never a fan of the Kruelboyz Hobgrots, but these models look more vicious and heavily armoured – making them look like they have just come out of the forges of the Chaos Duardin with whatever cast offs they can find to keep them alive a little longer than the rest of their unit!
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a brand new army for Warhammer Age of Sigmar, but for me the Helsmiths of Hashut knock it out of the park with an amazing range that captures the vibes of the classic Chaos Dwarfs while still doing things in a very new and Age of Sigmar way.
As ever, I suspect we’ll get a 2nd wave of Helsmiths in the future, and this is just the top of the ziggurat of evil stunty models for AOS…
The Helsmiths of Hashut main army release is up for pre order today and is released Saturday 1st November.
