Cursed with the death of their Primarch, the Blood Angels have access to some unusual units not seen in other chapters. Clad in hold power armour, the Sanguinary Guard strike from the heavens while Sanguinary Priests salvage precious geneseed.

Blood Angels Wave 2 Unboxing
We’ve been lucky enough to get quite a few new kits in this wave, compared to some other armies. It seems that following the Dark Angels, GW are keen to update some of the more non-standard chapter’s kits. For the Blood Angels we have 5 new kits following on from those in the Army Set
The Sanguinor
First up we have The Sanguinor! Not a massive departure to the old model, just recreated and modernised in plastic. He wasn’t too tricky to build up either, as is supported to the base pretty well for a flying model. The structure of the scrolls hanging from him makes a decent platform to hold the model, and also is a great flat surface for some free hand text work!
I really enjoyed painting him up, using a similar gold to my Stormcast. This is quite easy with a base of Retributor Gold, followed by a soft shade of thinned Goregrunter then a focused shade of Cygor. Once dry I then layer Auric Armour before drybrushing Liberator Gold. This makes painting gold models really quick and gives it a nice shiny look too!

Blood Angels Captain
Next up we have a brand new multi part Captain. While we already have lots of captain models, I feel this is a really nice one as it feels very “Blood Angels”. There’s actually 3 main ways to build this one. As a standard captain, as a Death Company captain or in a death mask as gold armour
I opted to build mine this way, as it gave me massive nostagia vibes for Tycho. You could actually lean into this even further than I did by giving him the Power Fist, though already having a fist armed captain I opted for the sword. Again, this one was really easy to build, and the kit leaves you with lots of spare parts to customise other models. I’m a big fan of multi part hero kits, and it’s great to see them back in the range!

Sanguinary Priest
Another new kit for the Blood Angels is the Sanguinary Priest. Again, not a massive departure to the old models, but this is quite nice in that it has quite a few customisation options. This means that even if you have multiple priests in your army that you still have some variety across them. For this model you can actually build him facing left or right, and there’s even different parts on the back pack to make it look natural either way. I do wish this still had a jump pack option in the Codex though!
Again he was easy to build up! I opted for the opposite stance as the box art along with a pistol. I do feel you could build up two of these and keep them looking unique.

Sanguinary Guard
The final kit in this Blood Angels release is the Sanguinary Guard! Now, I know this is very much a marmite kit! Some people love them, while others miss the wings of the classic models. I personally think they look ace, but understand how fans of the wings might be disappointed.
The kit does have a lot of options though, with the ability to build them up with swords or spears. Each can also go helmeted for helmet-less. New to the Codex is also a banner – which just looks really cool! I do feel these are a lot chunkier than the old ones, being Primaris, and look a lot more detailed and dramatic!
Again, I’ve started painting these up, and they have been really fun to work on. There’s a few fiddly bits compared to the other kits we’ve looked at today, but still was a pretty quick build! I would say though to make sure you have a good look at the instructions in full before you build them.
I’ll be updating the site once I have some more paint on these, so stay tuned!
The Sanguinary Guard cost £37
Summary
So what do I think of the new Blood Angels kits? While not a as many kits as some armies, the Blood Angels have still got a decent assortment of new kits here. While we do not get any brand new units, the refreshed kits look great and update some of the older parts of the Blood Angel range. I’m a little surprised we’ve not seen a new Terminator kit, or at least an upgrade kit for the new ones, but the classic Blood Angel Terminators do still hold up, and can still be used in games.
I really hope the Space Wolves get a similar amount of love too, as they have some pretty old kits now. I feel that GW are working their way through the Space Marine ranges to try and get everything up to a level playing field. While this does mean that some older kits are being phased out, if we’re getting new kits like these then I feel that is a fair trade off
The new Blood Angels kits are up for pre order today and are released Saturday 19th October.
