The Kingdom of Bretonnia do not only send their valiant Knights to battle on horseback, for they also send units of foot Knights armed with sword and shield or mighty great weapons to fulfill other roles on the battlefield. Today, the Bretonnian Knights of the Realm on Foot go on pre order following their reveal at the launch of Warhammer The Old World (I guess they just got here a little slower without their horses!)
In this review we’ll be taking a look at the kit and seeing how it goes together, along with painting up some noble Knights to get ready for battle!
Massive thanks to Games Workshop for sending us a free early review copy to take a look at on the site. If you would like to support the site then why not order your Old World supplies through our affiliate Element Games and save yourself 20% too?
We have also filmed a full unboxing of the kit which you can see just below or over on YouTube
So send your squire to fetch you a brew, and sit back as we check out the latest Old World plastic kit!
Kingdom of Bretonnia Knights of the Realm on Foot Unboxing and Review
So this one has been a long time coming! Originally due for release alongside the Kingdom of Bretonnnia box, the Knights of the Realm on Foot box is finally up for pre order. While it’s been delayed, it is well worth the wait as it is an absolutely gorgeous kit!
Consisting of 4 frames of 5 bodies and 2 frames of weapons and command parts, this is an impressively big kit that builds 20 men – this can be any combination of swords and shields or great weapons, 10 of each, or one unit of 20 of 1 built. This gives you lots of options in how to put together your models, and also has enough parts for 2 command groups if you do want to build them in units of 10. While the price tag is a little higher than other sets at £50 for 20 models, this does actually work out cheaper per model than things like Greatswords or Witch Elves and is a great pointer to Games Workshop putting out boxes for The Old World that build an entire unit rather than needing multiple boxes to put together a worth while force.
They are fun to put together, but for painting just keep in mind that there are a couple of areas that will be hard to get a brush to, so planning out the order in which you paint them is going to be important – I’d make sure to block in all the metals first before trying to paint the cloth for example
Also when building the standard, I don’t think the order that the instruction booklet puts them together is the best, so read it all first and feel free to go rogue and put it together in such a way that makes fitting the statue easier!
It is well worth taking the time when building and painting these however, because they are stunning models! I wanted to have the classic red and blue Bretonnian colour scheme from my youth and put together the army I always dreamed of when i first played Warhammer Fantasy Battles – and this translates really well to the new foot Knights
These are painting up using Two Thin Coats paints and I followed Duncan Rhodes’ Bretonnia guide – which is well worth a look at if you are looking to do something similar yourself
It’s a shame that Old World isn’t going to get a massive volume of new plastic kits, as the ones they have brought out look incredible compared to some of the classic kits that have returned. While those old kits do have a nostalgic charm, I can’t hide the fact that the newer kits look so much better! I hope that we at least get some plastics for the other factions as they are released during the course of the game in addition to the Forge World resin and returning metal models that will be coming along with them.
While there’s perhaps less call for multiple blocks of these compared to other units, the Knights on Foot are a gorgeous kit and do have a niche if you want a heavily armoured anchor or some reliable great weapon power in your Bretonnia force.
The Kingdom of Bretonnia Knights of the Realm on Foot are up for pre order today and are released on Saturday 16th March
