Legion Astartes Siege Assault Battle Group Unboxing and Review
The Siege Assault Battle Group is another great value box set which contains 23 plastic models, 22 of which are brand new sculpts available for first time in this set. The box itself retails for £129 although I would expect you to be able to grab it for around £105 from 3rd party stores. A Leviathan Siege Dreadnought and ten Tartaros Terminators can be purchased separately for around £110 so you’re benefiting from a nice discount as well as picking up some otherwise currently unavailable separately plastic kits!
Let’s have a closer look at those new Cataphractii Terminators first. Wow, these models are incredible, easily my favourite kit in the box. You get twelve models all in with the various sprues allowing you to build two squads of six, each with a different load out. There are enough bits to build a six man squad armed with either combi-bolters and power fists or volkite chargers and power mauls (note – it is possible to mix the load outs up as well – combi-bolters with power fists for example). You’ll also find two power swords, two thunder hammers and two power axes on the sprues in addition to a reaper autocannon and heavy flamer so get plenty of options when building the units. That’s not all though as you’ll also find various accessories such as crest options, grenade harnesses and even two different types of pauldron and thigh plate to really customise the look of your units.
I build and painted up a VIIth Legion Terminator and I have to say I am really impressed with this kit. The model has a very imposing and bulky silhouette and stands approximately a head taller than a standard power armored marine. The scale of the model’s limbs and it’s posture is much improved over the original version – they really look and feel much ‘tankier’ and ponderous. The sculpting team have done a fantastic job with this kit and I’ll be looking to field a whole army of these guys in the future for sure!
The Legion Breacher Squad is the second unit in the box and these too are brand new plastic sculpts, replacing the older ‘Forgeworld’ resin kits. You get enough bits to build ten Breacher marines which share the legs, torso, pauldrons and power pack components with their MkIII Tactical marine counterparts. Alongside those sprues you get a single new sprue which contains the Breacher arms, bolters and breacher shields alongside a set of Breacher specific helms. I really like the sleeker looking MkIII helm, a sort of cross between the standard MkIII helm and the later MKIV. On this sprue you also get a single graviton gun and lascutter. This is perphaps my only criticism of the sprue really as you’re unable to build a squad containing two of a specific special weapon which I suspect most players would want to field.
Again I painted these as Imperial Fists, inspired by Captain Camba Diaz and his valiant last stand on the Pons Solar. The model itself is a great upgrade on the original resin sculpts, bringing the model in line scale wise with the rest of the Legion Astartes troops. The helmets are very cool though and I would love to use these on other units in the army.
Finally, to round out the new box set is a Leviathan Siege Dreadnought armed with claw and drill and three infantry transfer sheets.
I’m really impressed with the new Legion Astartes Siege Assault Battle Group box providing you with a nice little discount and advanced access to the fantastic new Cataphractii Terminators and Breacher Squad. The box itself could easily form the start of a new force or used to expand an existing army, it is a shame the box is only available while stocks last.
The Terminators in particular are a really impressive kit, finally bringing that hulking, tank like imagery from the lore to the table top. I can’t wait to see this kit expanded on in the future with melee options and also hopefully Legion specific upgrades – it would be easy for Games Workshop to release an upgrade pack for Justaerin Terminators to combine with this new plastic set for example.
The Legion Astartes Siege Assault Battle Group is up for pre order today, Saturday 27th of December and will be released on Saturday 10th of January.
