White Scars Combat Patrol Review – Warhammer 40k

The White Scars Combat Patrol charges across the battlefields of the 41st Millenium, up for pre order today and led by their brand new character Suboden Khan. In this full review and unboxing we’ll be checking out the contents of the box, seeing how much value is in the set, building and painting them and checking out the rules for Suboden and the new White Scars Detachment that is released alongside this set.

Massive thanks to Games Workshop for sending us over the new Combat Patrol to check out on the site. If you would like to support the site then why not order your White Scars Combat Patrol through our affiliate Element Games and save yourself some money too?

We’ve also filmed a full unboxing of the new Combat Patrol which you can see just below or over on YouTube

So without further ado, let’s check out the contents of the new Combat Patrol!

White Scars Combat Patrol Unboxing

We’ve had a lot of love for Space Marine Chapters recently with multiple Combat Patrols and new characters getting released for a number of Chapters. For the White Scars, Games Workshop have done things a little differently by combining the two by having the new model in the Combat Patrol.

I know there will be some moans from people who want just the model by itself, but to me this is a really nice thematic set that gives you some units you’d want to have in a White Scars army anyway!

The box is £105, which is the new price for Combat Patrols, but you get some decent kits in here. First up is a unit of Outriders (RRP £40) which are the push fit kits from Indomitus. While a little old now they still look great, though I do wonder if they will get a proper multipart kit at some point in the future. Alongside these are a squad of 5 Assault Intercessors (£20) which are the full multi part kit. These are still really nice, and fit with the fast moving theme of the White Scars. The Assault Intercessors are carried to battle in an Impulsor (RRP £55) which I’ve never actually built before, but is a cracking transport with a modern take on the classic Rhino. Already with just those kits we have £115 which is over the cost of the box.

On top of this you also get Suboden Khan on his jetbike. It’s hard to predict a RRP for this one, but a Chaplain on Bike is £35.50 and I wouldn’t expect him to be any less than that, meaning the combat patrol saves you around £50 on RRP in total.

Another addition to the box which surprised me is a brand new White Scars transfer sheet. I was expecting just a generic Space Marine one, so getting a full sheet suggests that we might just see some more White Scars love in the future – I hope this is the case as feel there’s a lot of fun stuff they could do for them in a supplement book for example.

I had about a week to get these ready for the article, so wanted to have something that was really quick to do, but still looked good on the table. To do this I used an old scheme I had for my Heresy White Scars – Spray the models brown and then hit them with an angled spray of white that leaves some of the brown in the shadows – essentially this does your shading for you. I then simply painted the reds. leathers and metals, washed everything with Ratling Grime and then run a thinned mix of it into any recesses. After that it was just a case of sponging any sharp edges with Rhinox hide to give the illusion of weathering. Doing it this way you can knock out the White Scars Combat Patrol really quickly while still having them ready for battle!

The star of the show is the new character though, and well worth picking up the box for him alone. I really hope that we get other Jetbikes in the near future, as an army filled with them would look amazing! there’s some nice nods to the other Space Marine grav vehicles with the same repulsor panels fitted along the bottom, and a nice chunky feeling that you imagine would be heavy and loud, but also quick like a drag car!

I would say, if you’re looking to paint this one to make sure that you keep him separate from the bike – this way you can paint him without having any of the detail obscured, and then simply glue him in place once done!

If you’re new to painting, whats nice is that a lot of the surfaces and textures match what you see in the rest of the box – so paint up everything else in the set and you’ll be ready to tackle the main guy!

Games Workshop are releasing some rules for him too – he clocks in at just over 100 points and can be attached to Outrider squads (again, hopefully in the future he will have jetbikes to ride alongside!) and allows them to shoot and charge after falling back, and the ability to pass through terrain when making any type of move, which is really cool! He’s no slouch in combat either with decent ranged and melee options. If you’re taking White Scars then you’ll probably want to run him for rule of cool anyway!

And if you are taking him and a White Scars army then you will most likely want to take the new Spearpoint taskforce. This represents Suboden’s personal force, and grants the entire army the ability to charge after falling back. Suboden also gets better in this detachment as if he destroys a unit in the fight phase he gets to move 6″.

They have some pretty nice Enhancements. One allows you to increase the strength and AP of a weapon by 1, which increases to +2 on the change! One allows for rerolls of advancing for the unit. The next gives ranged weapons sustained hits and ignores cover while the final one allows you to come in from reserves as if the battleround is one higher (essentially letting you come in turn 1)

There’s also some nice things in the Strats – my favourites are Spear Thrust and Saber Swing which gives a unit Lance or Lethal Hits (or both if you pick a mounted unit!) or Withdraw and Regroup which allows you to pick a mounted or flying unit and place it into reserves.

After painting up the Combat Patrol I’m very tempted to expand this army out further, especially if the rumours of more fast units next edition are true…

At the time of writing I’ve not seen any rules for the Combat Patrol itself, but hopefully we do get some, as feel this would be a nice fast paced box to use in that game!

I enjoyed painting this way more that I thought I would, and I think White Scars fans will fall in love with the new character!

The White Scars Combat Patrol is up for pre order today and is released Saturday 25th October
