The Twin Lance, Berehk Stornbrow and Tyranid Prime Unboxing and Review – Warhammer 40k

It’s a big week for Warhammer 40k with The Twin Lance for the Tau, Berehk Stornbrow for the Leagues of Votann and the Tyranid Prime with Lash Whip on the way! This is all alongside the individual releases from the Maelstrom book too!

In this article we’ll be taking a look at the new kits, seeing how they go together and painting them up to see what they look like in the flesh. We’ll also be taking a look at the rules if you want to see what exactly it is that The Twin Lance does in game, or if Berehk adds any punch to your army.

Massive thanks to Games Workshop for sending us over early review copies to check out on the site. If you would like to support the site then why not order your goodies through our affiliate Element Games and save yourself some money too?

We’ve also filmed a full unboxing covering The Twin Lance, Berehk and the Prime which you can see just below or over on YouTube

So without further ado let’s take a look at the kits and their rules!

The Twin Lance – T’au

Let’s start with the big one that most people are excited for – The Twin Lance!

This kit clocks in at £67 and contains each of the two thins and their gun drones.

I had a T’au army back in the mists of time, but it’s been a while since I built a battle suit – but these guys are a joy to build and there’s some really nice details to The Twin Lance, such as each twin being mirrored with their equipment, and even some subtle changes between the two like the power shield on one being activated.

I went for my Shi’nji Sept colour scheme again, and I have a craving to paint up some more now – as I really enjoyed working on these guys! Evangellion schemes really work on T’au and I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone else is going to paint theirs!

So what do The Twin Lance do? Well they’re pretty good! The main weapons differ per model with one having a high volume of fire marine killer (Which can be overcharged for taking out 3 wound models) while the other has a decent melta weapon – but what makes these really cool is the fact that both of these guns can also be used in close combat too.

Close Combat battle suits is something we’ve often dreamed of, but the question has always been how are they going to be implemented. The Twin Lance do this nice and easily by simply giving them guns designed to be fired at close quarters rather than giving them energy swords or something (which while cool, doesn’t really scream “T’au”)

Packing 8 wounds each, a 2+ save and a 4+ inv they are pretty durable, and with Scout 8″ and Deep Strike combined with movement 10 they are nippy too!

Oh, and if you shoot the closest target you get sustained hits and ignores cover too!

Did I mention they are only 160 points too? This is hilariously cheap for what they put out, and I fully expect to see them in lots of T’au armies!

Berehk Stornbrow – Leagues of Votann

Next up is Berehk Stornbrow for the Leagues of Votann. This guy is basically a Cthonian Berserk character, and if you’ve built any of them you’ll know what to expect here.

This guy is £29 and consists of a single frame with no customisation.

I’m a big fan of the Berserks, so this guy was great fun to paint up for me – I particually like the Ork head he is holding aloft! Based on recent WarCom reveals maybe this is pointing to more goodies coming for the Orks in future such as the awesome looking multi part Warboss!

From a rules POV this guy gives his unit Sustained Hits 1 (Which is nice on those weapons) and he can do Heroic Intervention for free, even if it has already been used in the phase – which is nice. Weapons are pretty good with some high strength and high damage output. You’ve got a choice between his sweeps which are a nice high volume marine killer, or half the attacks in exchange for more strength and damage. He has Anti-monster and vehicle too, making this guy pretty good at punching tanks to death.

At 110 points I feel he is a little pricey compared to The Twin Lance, but he is great if you are leaning into Cthonians.

Tyranid Prime (with Lash Whip)

The final kit in this wave is the Tyranid Prime with Lash Whip. Just like the Leagues of Votann character, this is a single frame and costs £27.

I’m surprised it’s taken us this long to get a Tyranid Prime model outside of the one you can build in the Tyranid Warrior box. I always felt that the Winged Prime in the Leviathan box was always an odd inclusion too – he didn’t really fit well with the units in the box, and without winged Warriors it always seemed a bit weird. I feel this model would have been a better fit, but at least we have it now!

This guy can be attached to Warriors, Hormagaunts and Termagants (Though I deffo feel he works better with the first two) and gives his unit Sustained hits. In addition if a unit shoots at his unit they get to do a surge move if any models are slain, which is pretty nice!

Again, he seems pretty expensive, clocking in at 85 points (which is 20 points more than the winged version!) Though I can see a big unit of warriors with sustained hits being pretty tasty!

We’re currently working our way through the end of edition narrative campaign, and it’s nice to see a splash release like this to give some love to some of the races who have not been featured in the model releases so far. One of the best things about these narrative arks is the chance to give new models to lots of forces, and this is a pretty great little release with The Twin Lance in particular being the star of the show.

All these models are up for pre order today and are released Saturday 21st March
