Maximus Battle Group Unboxing and Review
Games Workshop have put out quite a few Battle Group boxes over the last few years – these tend to be big bundle boxes that give you a mixture of new and old miniatures for a discounted price.
This one clocks in at £134 and contains a Contemptor and a Sicaran alongside 20 brand new MKIV Tactical Marines and 10 MKIV Assault Marines (that can also be built as veterans)
A unit of Marines normally costs £54.50, Assault Marines cost £44.50, a Contemptor is £40 and a Sicaran is £55 – so in total you’re getting £194 and essentially getting a discount of £60 off the contents, which is great if you want all of these kits. If you’re only after the marines then don’t worry, the separate kits normally follow quite quickly afterwards!
The Sicaran and Contemptor are still great kits – and the Contemptor comes with all of the possible weapon options (unlike the one that came in the last Age of Darkness box) – what’s more it is very easy to use magnets to make it possible to swap all the weapons. You could probably get away with just friction too, but they will get more loose over time, so magnets are probably the best bet here
So what about the new kits?
Let’s start with the Maximus Tactical Marines.
We’ve seen a gradual rescale over the relaunch of Horus Heresy, and the same is done here – these marines are in line scale wise with the other new marine kits, and just like them they are fully compatible with all of the upgrade sets including the command one. What’s nice here is that you get some armour panels on the sprue that helps you match the arms on those kits to the armour style on this one, which is a great touch!
There’s loads of optional parts on the sprue such as pouches, but you can choose to leave these off to make the model easier to paint too.
You get the same core upgrade frame for the command options, though this is looking a little old now and I feel this could do with a refresh
The Assault Marines are a lot more exciting though, as there’s 10 Power Lances on the frame allowing you to put together the entire box as a squad of 10 Veteran Assault Marines
They look really cool loaded out like this and so I opted to build them all this way! You could of course build them all as regular Assault Marines too, but I went for rule of cool on this one.
The jump pack itself is a slightly different design to the old resin one, and I know some people have been disappointed by that, but I still think it looks cool when finished, and being compatible with melee weapon upgrades you can opt to give them different loadouts too.
Summary
So what do I think of the Maximus Battle Group box? I’m a big fan of MKIV armour, so this is one I was very much looking forward to, and getting both the Tacticals and Assault Marines combined with a Contemptor and Sicaran gives you a nice mix of units in the box. And the set makes both a great starting point for a MKIV army, or an expansion of an existing force
The Maximus Battle Group is up for pre order today and is released Saturday 11th July
