It’s about time the Adeptus Mechanicus received some reinforcements!

Thulia Ghuld, a brand new named character, enters the fray alongside a new ‘Devastator’ unit, called the Hastarii.

Our thanks to Games Workshop for sending these two kits over to unbox and paint. You can preorder these new kits right now from GW, or you could wander over to Element Games, our affilates, here. This will save you money vs RRP and help us out massively too!

You can check out the unboxing below:

We do also have articles and videos up for the rest of the Eye of Terror range, including a review of the book, the new Knight Destrier, Kravek Morne and the new Mutilators and the Defiler.

Thalia Ghuld

We are going to look at the new named character first, the impressive looking Thulia Ghuld.

He’s a fair bit bigger than the Tech Priests they have so far, but smaller than Cawl.

He was OK to build. He does have a few slightly fiddlier bits during his assembly, but nothing that made me rage.

He’s a very cool model once built, with lots of cool little details.

His ranged weapon has two firing models, your usual more shots less damage, and your less shots more damage (D6+2 damage no less!).

Im happy with the paint job I’ve given him. It’s been a while since I’ve painted any Adeptus Mechanicus.

Previously I’d done a Mars scheme army, but this time around opted for Ryza.

I will pop back to him and touch him up a bit.

Hastarii

A brand new ranged unit for the Adeptus Mechanicus, and I think they look pretty cool!

You can build one of two units out of the box, the Exterminators (with a shoulder mounted arc rifle and heavier arc type weapon) or the Fusiliers holding basically mini lascannons, with shoulder mounted stubbers).

These were really easy to assemble, with no dramas during assembly.

Painting wise, they were fun to paint, although I would say the inside robes were very tricky due to the poses and the legs.

Again, I may pop back to these to add to the paint job, but I’m happy with what I’ve done!

I opted for the Exterminators for the damage two, elite infantry killing weapons, as I think it looks cooler, and prefer the shoulder mounted Arc rifles. I can however see the Fusilers ending more popular as outside of tanks you don’t have much in the way of high damage high strength weapons.

New Rules

The datasheets for both units can be found in the Faction Pack: Adeptus Mechanicus over on Warhammer Community.

Thulia Ghuld has some fantastic abiltiies to go with his great weaponry. He has an Icon Of War rule, which is usable in the Command Phase and allows you to choose from one of three abiltiies to be active until your next command phase. This includes stuff like being able to fall back and shoot, and having both Imperatives running at the same time on a selected unit.

The Hastarii’s key points are of course their weapons, however the Exterminators also get Sustained Hits (1) against anything other than Monsters and Vehicles, whilst the Fusiliers get Ignores Cover when shooting Vehicles and Monsters.

Summary

These are two very cool units being added to an already cool looking range of minis.

Thulia Ghuld is looking really good right now, with some solid abilities and an insanely powerful Jericho-class ranged weapon. His Icon of War abilities are the standout I feel here, along with him being secure with Lone Operative when within range of a friendly Mechanicus unit.

The Hastarii have had some negative comments, but I think they look ace, in particular the build I went for, the Exterminators. Both builds fill a gap in the range, giving Mechanicus players more flexability when creating a balanced army list.

Can’t wait to try them out on the battlefield!
