The old Defiler was starting to look out of place amongst all the cool stuff Chaos Space Marines can take, so it was about time it got a glow up, and what a glow up it has received!

Our thanks to Games Workshop for sending us the new Defiler to unbox, build and paint. You can preorder one right now! Why not preorder through our affilates over at Element Games? You’ll save cash VS RRP and help us out too!

The new Defiler kit is coming out with the new Eye of Terror book, which Matt has kindly reviewed here. He has also been working on a certain new Iron Warriors character, Kravek Morne, and the new Mutilators. As well as the Deflier I have also been working on some Adeptus Mechanicus reinforcements.

You can watch the full unboxing video for the Defiler below:

The Kit

The Deflier is split across three sprues. No really annoying fiddly bits which is ace.

It does come with what I believe to be a brand new Chaos Marines Vehicle Transfer sheet (apologies if I am wrong!). You’ll see shortly that I made use of this.

The Build

The model has two different poses, one where he’s almost uniformed, looking forward, whilst the second build gives him a bit of a charging or swinging tilt.

He comes with heads for everyone. You get generic heads as well as unique heads for all 4 of the Chaos Gods. You also get a unique Iron Warriors one too, which is very cool.

Not only this, but you get a choice of (what I would call) top plate, including options for it being blank (pretty for a transfer) or with a trophhy rack.

Finally, you get one more (very interesting) build option…his legs

The ‘standard’ build has his legs being supported by large parts of broken masonary, whilst what the instructions call the ‘advanced’ build means it’s a little tricky to assemble, as most of the legs/claws go straight on to the base.

A word on the weapons. You can potentially magnetise them, I think, but be warned the nubs on body piece aren’t super big. You have to glue the arms on if not for magnets, as they don’t push or click in.

The Paint Job

I love painting Death Guard / Nurgle, so I was super pleased to be granted the model to build and paint.

He has a lot of trim (which I am sure you Chaos Space Marine players already prepare themselves for.

He doesn’t look out of place next to my Death Guard army, yet I expect other they’ll fit really nicely in with the other armies that may get reinforced with one of these.

Because of his positioning, and because of his size, I didn’t find any part of painting difficult.

Deflier Rules

He’s 250 points now, so a step up from the original Defiler, but he is so much better.

You can find the datasheets for the Deflier over on Warhammer Community. He has a different Datasheet for each of the main four Chaos Gods, but aside from a unique ability, his stats remain the same.

The flail is worth mentioning, as they are Extra Attacks on top of the more powerful claw attacks.

Summary

What a superb model, a real centrepiece.

His options are awesome, and was a very fun build. I love the number of choices you get to make when assembling, somthing I really miss with a number of new builds (although we are starting to see a lot more variation and options when building, in particular for characters.

I really want to build and paint another!
