This week Games Workshop are releasing all of the Index Datasheet packs for every single faction in the game! Today is the turn of the various Space Marine chapters, and in this post we’re heading to Fenris with the Space Wolves
Massive thanks to Games Workshop for giving us access to the rules a little early, and you can download them right now off WarCom!
If you would like to support the site then why not order your Space Wolves through our affiliate Element Games and save yourself some money too?
We also have a whole raft of 40k 10th Edition and Leviathan content up, so be sure to check it out here on the site or on YouTube!
Champions of Russ Deatchment
The Space Wolf index is a big one with 80 pages – this is due to the Space Wolves having lots of units that they swap out for their own specialist ones. This means that “vanilla” units such as Devastators and Assault Squads are not available to them.
Their unique mechanic are “Deeds Worthy of Sagas” – This has you try to achieve various challenges in order to obtain a buff for your army. For example, if one of your characters manages to kill a vehicle or monster then your entire army lets lethal hits, or if a character is taken to half strength but not killed then the whole army gets Feel No Pain 6+
This is really fun and captures the theme of your units trying to make these epics deeds, and the rest of the army getting stronger from their escapades!
Champions of Russ Deatchment
Like with the other Space Marine chapters we get 4 enhancements locked to the Champions of Russ
The Pelt of the Balewolf is pretty tasty as it causes all enemy units within engagement range to take a battleshock at the start of the combat phase – don’t forget if you fail battleshock then you can’t use stratagems!
Black Death turns the hero into a monster hunter, giving them Anti Monster 4+ and Anti Vehicle 4+
The Wolf Tail Talisman is another damage reduction ability granting them -1 to incoming damage – I’ve had it confirmed that this and similar abilities reduces to a minimum of 1 however
Frost Weapon improves strength and AP by 1 and also gives them precision shots, allowing you to target heroes within units in combat
Champions of Russ Stratagems
Like with the other Space Marine chapters, we get 6 Stratagems in the Champions of Russ detachment
Armour of Contempt returns making incoming attacks worsen their AP by 1
Go for the Throat instead increases your AP, and if the Saga of the Beastslayer has been completed then those weapons gain Lance too
Runic Wards gives the target a 5+ Feel No Pain against Mortal Wounds, which again increases to 4+ if the Saga of the Bear has been compelted
Death Howl allows the target to consolidate 6 inches as long as it is into engagement range, and if the Saga of Majesty is completed then the unit you crash into has to take Battleshock, which is a really nice way of taking over an objective
Relentless Assault lets you fall back and shoot, but if you have completed the Saga of the Warrior Born then you can charge too
And finally Warrior Pride lets you count as having completed one of the Sagas until the end of the turn if you have not yet completed it
Key Units
There are a lot of units included in the Index, and you can check them all out for yourself right now, but I just wanted to call out a few of my favourite ones
Harald Deathwolf is a nice unit to lead a big squad of Thunderwolf Cavalry as while he is leading them and makes a charge he gives all of the wolves attacks Devastating Wounds, which can push a fair few Mortal Wounds through on a decent sides unit
Canis Wolfborn works in a similar way but gives everything sustained hits all the time!
The Thunderwolves themselves are pretty cool, being fast, having 4 wounds and increasing damage on the charge, which comboes really nicely with Harald.
If you like punching tanks then why not take Murderfang, 8 S14 attacks is pretty nice, but whats really cool is that whenever he is targeted he gets to fight – So if you charge a unit, make all your attacks, and then they have anyone to fight back, after they make those attacks then you get to fight again!
There’s loads more in here, so make sure to check them all out over on Warhammer Community
