When this kit was on the horizon, I was initially a little worried about how expensive it would be. It’s around the same size as the Baneblade, but that’s quite an old kit now and there was a concern that this one would be quite a bit higher. My worries were put at ease when I learned that this would be retailing at £125, which seems a great price for a plastic version of the resin kit – especially as this is going to be the big centrepiece in a lot of Astartes armies. From a points to pounds point of view you’re getting pretty good value here, and it’s a lot easier to build than a resin one.

As you can imagine there’s a lot of plastic in the Fellblade kit, and just like with the Land raider chassis tanks in 2nd Edition it seems like they have put this kit together with future expansion in mind. There’s a couple of different Astartes Super-Heavies that all share the same core chassis and the kit is built in such a way so that with the swapping of a couple of sprues all of these variants could be built from the kit. This is great, as hopefully means the other Super Heavy tanks are not too far away and also helps to move as much of the resin range to plastic. I think one of the goals with the next few years of Heresy will be moving as many kits as they can to plastic, especially some of the larger and multi-material kits they have done over the years. While we may get a little bit of “tank fatigue” again, once these are done it opens up the possibility of things like the fliers getting a chance in plastic too, which is super exciting!

One nice thing to note here too is that the kit contains the “old” Spartan sponson frame and the new one with the laser destroyer and bolters. This actually gives you enough parts to build 2 sets of sponsons of any loadout, which is really nice to do in order to have some different options on your Fellblade, but it also means that you could use the spare one on your existing Spartans in order to get access to a couple of the new weapons in the new Libers.

There’s also a really nice “Super Heavy” transfer sheet in the box that covers not only the Iron Warriors and Salamanders, but also the Sons of Horus and Imperial fists. I love that they are conscious that a lot of collectors will have started Sons or Fists armies last edition, and the fact that transfers for them are also included is a great touch!

This is one of my favourite tanks that I’ve worked on, and I had so much fun painting it up! The large panels make it really quick to airbrush up, while still having enough flat space for transfers and recessed details great for weathering. I’ve not built a resin one, so don’t have a direct comparison across the two versions, but outside a couple of cosmetic changes to bring it in line with the other recent marine tanks this is a really nice new take on the Fellblade without being a million miles away from the old one.

Just like with the sponsons, the main turret twists into place, so it can be removed for storage, and when you do that it’ll comfortably fit in a 9l storage box alongside some other tanks, making it a little easier to transport to games too!

In summary the Fellblade is a awesome kit and if you’re starting a new Astartes army for 3rd edition this is a nice fun choice for your Lord of War allowence that gives you a great centerpiece to paint up for your army!

The Fellblade is up for pre order today and is releases Saturday 4th October
