BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD !
SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE !
Boy do I love World Eaters and going into the new edition I hoping to play them a lot so I was very excited to see their index and I have to say I am not disappointed.
Massive thanks to Games Workshop for giving us access to the rules a little early, and you can download them right now off WarCom!

Army Rule
The Blessings of Khorne rule is the new version of the blood tithe mechanic that World Eaters had in the previous edition and I have to say that I prefer this new version simply because I can start getting those all important blessings off turn 1 whereas the previous blood tithe mechanic relied on units dying before you got any blessings plus I now get to roll more dice which is always good.
So the way this works is at the start of a battle round the World Eater player rolls eight D6 and those dice can be used to give two blessings from the list below depending on the dice roll you get. Each blessing can only be used once per battle round and the effects apply to all of your units until the end of the battle round.
- Rage Fuelled Invigoration – any double – add 2″ to the movement characteristic of your units.
- Wrathful Devotion – any double – your units gain the feel no pain 6+ ability and if they already have a feel no pain rule add 1 to the roll.
- Martial Excellence – double 3+ – melee weapons have the sustained hits 1 ability.
- Total Carnage – double 4+ or any triple – each time a friendly model dies from a melee attack if that model hasn’t fought yet in that turn then on a 4+ that model gets to fight immediately after the attacking unit has finished making their attacks and is then removed from the table.
- Warp Blades – double 5+ or a triple – melee weapons have the lethal hits ability.
- Unbridled Bloodlust – double 6 or triple 4+ – units are eligible to declare a charge in a turn in which it advanced.
With this new mechanic there is some luck involved in terms of what you roll on the dice so I can see why some players might not like the random element to the Blessings of Khorne army rule however after spending probably too long rolling some dice I found that the only blessing that was wasn’t reliably getting was the Unbridled Bloodlust as the double 6 didn’t come up and most triples were not 4+ but all the other blessings I got pretty consistently.
Detachment Rule
World Eaters get the Relentless Rage rule which World Eater player will be familiar with, on the charge World Eater units get +1 strength and attack which for an army that is based around combat is pretty good.
Enhancements
- Favoured of Khorne – This enhancement allows you to re-roll all of the dice when you make your bleeding of khorne roll.
- Berzerker Glaive – The bearer gets +1 attack and damage to melee weapons when the bearer charges add D3 instead.
- Battle Lust – The bearer and it’s unit can be targeted by the heroic intervention stratagem for 0CP even if you have used that stratagem on a different unit that phase.
- Helm of the Brazen Ire – Each time an attack is allocated to the bearer halve the damage of that attack.
Stratagems
- Gory Massacre 1CP – After one of your units destroys an enemy unit in combat then in your opponents next command phase enemy units within 6″ of where that unit was must take a battleshock test at -1, I’m not a big fan of this one.
- For the Skull Throne 1CP – You can give a friendly unit +1 to wound rolls against a character, monster or vehicle unit in the fight phase.
- For the Blood God 1CP – After one of your units destroys an enemy unit you can make a blessing of khorne roll and choose one additional blessing which is very good.
- Khorne Care Not… 2CP – Pick one of your units in the fight phase and enemy units subtract 1 from the damage of that attack when targeting your unit.
- Blood Offering 1CP – When one of your units is destroyed on an objective you can use this stratagem to keep hold of that objective until your opponent takes control of it in a later turn.
- Apoplectic Frenzy 1CP – Instead of rolling an advance roll for a unit you can automatically add 6″ to the movement characteristic of the unit that advanced this combo’s really nicely with the blessing of khorne unbridled bloodlust.
Datasheets
It goes without saying really that World Eater units are pretty solid in combat and in the new edition they are just as powerful and scary thankfully some units have been tweaked a bit to make them more useful in your army, the Master of Executions now gives any unit he is leading the always strikes first ability which is very powerful racially if you have been charged. Terminators now have the blood fury rule which gives them +1 to hit rolls if they are below their starting strength and +1 to wound rolls if they are below half strength which on a big unit is still very scary.
Summary
For me how good an army is comes down to one thing, is that army fun to play and World Eaters in the new edition at first glance seem very fun to play which is what I want. The blessing of Khorne army rule I think will not be everyones cup of tea ( how British of me ) due to how random it can be but for me it looks fun and some of the bonus’ really do seem like they add a lot to your already powerful combat units.
