Want to be able to put together a modular battlefield suitable for a wide assortment of Sci fi games? Our friends over at Dark Fantastic Mills are currently running their Horizon Station Kickstarter allowing you to do just that, and they have sent us over a sample building to show off exactly what it can do!

In this post we’ll be taking a look at Horizon Station and seeing if this is worth picking up to print up the Necromunda battlefield of your dreams! If you’re not sure what the quality or modularity is like before you back it, we’ll be giving the sample building the full run down to see what it’s like to play games over.

If you would like to support the site and pick up any models for your sci fi games then dont forget our affiliate link to Element Games and save yourself some money too!

Once we’ve got this painted up we;ll be doing a full video too, stay tuned to the site to check that out! But first, let’s take a look at what Horizon Station is exactly!

Horizon Station Review

Before we jump into the review though, who exactly are Dark Fantastic Mills? DFM have been producing ace 3d printed terrain for years covering a wide range of different genres and games – they have also launched a number of successful Kickstarters giving backers access to files to print terrain at home on FDM printers (such as the ace Centurai Carbon).

This latest Kickstarter is for a collection of STL’s that allow you to print up some really ace scifi scenery – Hive Worlds, Space Ports, Space Ships, Industrial Complex’s, the only limitation is your imagination!

DFM have made this possible with a system of tiles and wall sections that all cleverly clip together in order to make multiple different structures

We’ve been sent a sample of a building that you can make from the parts – and this is an ace little structure with two floors, a top surface that models can move on and a platform that runs all the way around the building.

Using a clever series of magnets and clips this can be taken apart for access to different floors, or even combined with other pieces to create different buildings and structures.

There’s some really nice details in the Horizon Station too such as doors that can open by sliding them to one side and removable grills to access the top level of the building without having to remove the lid.

I’m a massive fan of Necromunda, so this kind of structure really appeals to me – I can picture an ace board with lots of these multi level structures giving you some real narrative to scenarios with players having to try and force their way into buildings to take a key location. It’s not just skirmish games like Necromunda or Boarding Actions this is suited to – it would work just as well for Zone Mortalis games of Warhammer The Horus Heresy or even Star Wars Legion or 40k to represent an industrial environment you can fight over!

There’s options for exterior details on these builds too – the samples we have have cunningly placed magnets that allow you things such as pipes, ladders and vents to them, letting you keep everything modular and use multiple different layouts for your games.

It all holds securely with the clips built into each piece while still being easy enough to take apart to use for other structures too!

As you can see from the above picture the buildings are very roomy and easily fit 40k scale models with lots of space to move around and fight inside them.

The Kickstarter ends 10pm on Friday 29th, so you dont have long left to back it, but it’s well worth doing – especially since you can get the entire collection for just £45 too. I’ve backed a number of DFM’s previous campaigns, and they are always amazing value compared to buying the files separately once the campaign has ended, so make sure to check it out before the campaign ends!

Full details and ways to back can be found here

Massive thanks to Dark Fantastic Mills for sending us this over to check out on the site!
