On the 29th of September I went to a new event called the Triple C event ( Craig Chester’s Cup ) which was set up as a fundraising event in memory of our friend Craig who sadly passed away a couple of months ago.

Craig was the main organiser of my local club the Purple Sparkly Unicorns for the last six years since its inception, in that time Craig ran a lot of events for both Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar both of which he really enjoyed playing and he pretty grew a community of players that started at a humble twenty of so and now numbers at over three hundred ! Needless to say club nights were very busy. During the fourteen years that I knew Craig we had a lot of laughs and fun and this hobby really did give me an amazing friend who was always there for me who will be sorely missed.

All of the proceeds from the event went to raising money towards the End of Life Care Appeal who will use the money to buy more fold out chair beds for family members to stay with their loved ones during their final days in hospital, the appeal also wants to create outdoor space for relatives to access in hospitals and care packs for family members during an incredibly difficult time.

If you would like to donate to the charity you can using the link below.

In order to raise more money in memory of Craig the organiser of the event put on a raffle to win some pretty amazing prizes, a special thanks to the following who donated prizes and awards :

  • Element Games
  • Artis Opus
  • Trans Atlantic Games
  • Dark fantastic Mills

The raffle prizes and painting awards you can see below.

In total the event raised approximately £1,300 ! for the charity which is an insane amount of money and I know Craig’s family and close friends really do appreciate every penny.

Event Recap

The event itself was three games of Age of Sigmar at 1,750 points ( not 2,000 points due to time constraints ) which I really liked as it felt a bit more casual.

I ended up taking Sons of Behemat army to the event as I haven’t been to a 4th edition Age of Sigmar event until this one so I wanted a list that I felt I could play quickly with the least amount of complexity and hopefully be able to play a full five turns with. My list you can see below :

Game 1 – The Jaws of Gallet

Jumping into game one and I was up against Idoneth Deepkin playing the Jaws of Gallet battle plan, I picked the bodyguard ability from this seasons honour guard rules which I kept for simplicity in all three of my games. The game itself was really fun and a great start to the event as my opponent not only played well but really walked me through what he was doing and his intentions so there was no confusion or gotcha moments, his aspects of the sea and storm weakened one gargant at a time and with help from the moorsaar guard were able to take a gargant down pretty much each turn so by turn three when the always strike first came into effect it was pretty much game over man.

His allopex’s skirted around the flanks picking of the occasional bit of damage with ranged attacks and hovered near the objectives which forced me to keep a either my war – stomper or kraken – eater on the objectives and spread my force a bit too thin which again just shows the difference in player skill but again it was a fantastic game one.

Game 2 – Shifting Objectives

Game two was against sylvaneth on shifting objectives with the lady of life herself Alarielle making an appearance, I got very lucky the the first few turns with the primary objective being on my far right hand side which really kept me in the fight, most of the action took place on the central objective with Alarielle charging my gate breaker for me to use the colossal slam ability to get her in the danger zone of the two man crushers, sadly she survived and then fell back and healed up pretty quickly.

As the game got to turns four and five we were pretty much tied on points but with me losing a couple of gargants and the primary objective moving to my far left meant that in the last turn I had no battle tactics I could do as I didn’t have enough models to full fill the criteria and with the amount of healing that the sylvaneth can do meant that I narrowly lost in the last turn.

Still another fantastic game.

Result – Loss

Game 3 – The Better Part of Valour

Game three saw me playing against my fellow co-host Matt and his slaves to darkness army lead by Archaon himself, both me and Matt had lost our first two games so we had a feeling that we would be near each other going into the third round, this was awesome for me as I like playing against Matt and its nice to finish an event by playing a more casual list.

The game was bloody with the main focus being in the centre of the battlefield, Matt pushed Archaon up who then preceeded to get charged by the gate breaker and kracken eater who did a mighty nineteen wounds to Archaon, who when he did retaliate left my general the gate breaker on one wound over two turns, I did try to kill Archaon with a colossal slam ability when he was left on two wounds but Matt made a five up ward roll and crushed that dream.

The game had a lot of good moments in it besides the main foray in the middle of the board which made the game really fun and engaging, Matt had sent a unit of varanguard up my left flank who after a cheeky redeploy of a six from one of my man crushers weren’t able to make their nine inch charge and as a result did not have enough movement to get on the objective which lost Matt his battle tactic, also the other unit of varanguard on my right hand flank fought against the war stomper and over two turns killed the war stomper and losing two of their number in the process ( one from the war stomper’s timber ability ).

Result – Won

Best Painted

Its always nice at events to see some really well painted armies and the best painted nominations did not disappoint a special shout out to Trans Atlantic Games for donating the painting awards in the form of Two Thin Coat paints and Artis Opus for donating a set of brushes for first place. Man I wish I was better at painting.

Conclusion

As far as events go I think this was one of the better one day events I have been too in a long time the fact that I had a very personal connection to the event really did make the event even more memorable for me, the amount of money raised at the event was simply staggering and the organisers should be really proud of what they were able to do. I know that our friend Craig would have been very happy with what was achieved and the atmosphere that the event created, I look forward to the next Triple C event.

I had three awesome games against three awesome opponents and three awesome armies which helped me relax and remember why I go to events in the first place which is to role dice and spend time with like minded people enjoying a hobby that we all love.

This event was also my first taste of Age of Sigmar fourth edition and wow I really do enjoy the game, I’ve found myself over the last year or so gravitating more towards smaller skirmish games but some how I always find myself going back to Age of Sigmar, fourth edition feels very well laid out and that made the games I played quick but still complex enough to keep me engaged, next time I might try out a different army though as I felt quite restricted by what I could do tactically with the Sons of Behemat, not being able to do battle tactics at the right time really hurt me for example. Overall I have really enjoyed my experiences of fourth edition so far and look forward to playing more games in the future.
