A New Year and a New Start
With a new year comes a new start or so the saying goes and with that I will start this year off by jumping back into Hobby Goal updates and more !
With last year being well and truly behind us I have to say that my Hobby Goal updates stopped in June due to well… life, work was manic and a few things in regular life just stopped the updates and indeed my hobby for a time but as the title suggests with a new year comes a new start and with that more hobby updates.
Famous last words.
For 2024 I have a new set of Hobby Goals that I think are a bit more realistic for me while still being a challenge which you can see below.

The whole point of my Hobby Goal updates is simply to motivate myself and hopefully you wonderful readers into hobbying whether it’s building some models or painting that model that has been sat on the shelf for two years ( I’m looking at you Nagash ).
So let’s jump into the painting section which is usually the easiest to come up with as we hobbyists usually have a lot to paint in our backlogs and stuff we are interested in, the big one for me is to do an Old World army as I played a lot of 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy back in the day but I only ever played Dwarfs and my opponents were regular tournament players at the time so I never really got to “play for fun” or more accurately play casually. I have slowly been building up an Empire army for the Old World as they were the all round army that had a bit of everything in the list but with them not being realised at the time of writing this article I might have to defer to my second choice for my first Old World army which is TOMB KINGS !
I have been getting into Star Wars Shatter point and Marvel Crisis Protocol as I have been interested in playing more skirmish style games, I am certainly a fan of both the models and the rules so it made sense to get some painted up, I have the core set for shatter point and I don’t dare count how many Marvel Crisis Protocol models I have in my backlog so these were easy choices for hobby goals plus it allows me to paint only a handful of models and still have some interesting hobby goal updates.
Number five might seem strange but it is a hobby goal that I have been wanting to do for years, in White Dwarf 287 ( which is in the Warhammer vault ) there is a battle report between Matt Ward and Alessio Cavatore who recreate on the tabletop the battle for Minas Tirith, as a kid I loved The Lord of the Rings game and still do to be fair but this is such a cool battle report which has fairly small armies that until I became an adult and started working could never have afforded but now I feel is the time to recreate that battle report and with the newish Gondor scenery ( which will hopefully come back into stock soon ) I can.
The gaming orientated goals are very similar to last years but I have made them a bit more realistic with the big one to play 3 game systems I have not played before. For this I am thinking of Marvel Crisis Protocol, Star Wars Shatter point and lastly Conquest the last Argument of Kings which I wanted to start last year but never got around to, these might not seem too hard to do but with the three hobby goals that are specific to the podcast I feel I have a decent amount of hobbying to get on with… but thats not all.
You can check out the episode to find out what my podcast specific goals are here as well as Matt’s, Dave’s and Jay’s hobby goals for 2024 and maybe see how we got on last year… spoilers not great.
So this year I want to be focusing more on hobby content and with that I have some ideas for articles such as a Kill Team challenge that me and my friend Jason did last year whereby we randomly pick a Kill Team from our backlogs ( which are always expanding thanks to us really getting into Kill Team and Warcry ) every two months and paint up those teams. We did this for Kill Team but I want to include Warcry as well because well it’s a pretty cool game and I have a few warbands now that as you can imagine need some hobby time.
I have a few more ideas for articles like doing a four part series for Middle Earth where I start with one of the battle host boxes and then every article I add something to the force like heroes in the second update and elites models in the third and finish off by rounding out the army to at least 700 point armies which I think would be really cool to do, kind of like a tale of many gamers. I did start one back in September 2022 ! but never really got around to continuing that series which I intend to pick up so Mordor will be the first one in the series which you can check out here.
As for the rest of the year my plans are simple, add some units to my existing AOS armies in preparation for the new edition which I hope is coming this year, finally get around to doing a Horus Heresy army and maybe if I can do a couple of 1,000 point incursion forces for Warhammer 40k that would be great as well.
Hopefully I can do these hobby goals and more hobby content…. fingers crossed.
