Doomwheel: iOS Review

Before going off on my break to London I decided to refresh some of my mobile games on my iPhone ready for the train journeys and any downtime in the evenings.

I ended up stumbling across Doomwheel, a game created by Katsu Entertainment. Available on both the App Store and Google Play, I was surprised I’d not come across this before. With my current Skaven interest, I thought let’s give this a blast!

A Doomwheel is an odd war machine used by the Skaven Warlocks to hurtle across the battlefields of the Mortal Realms (Age of Sigmar) or in the World-That-Was (Warhammer Fantasy), killing stuff with warp powered weaponry, or failing that running stuff over. The mobile game uses the same premise.

The gameplay, in essence, is that of an endless runner. The screen zooms from right to left as your Doomwheel hurtles across the environment. To begin with your killing rival clans, before later in the game moving onto Dwarfs and should you choose to pay to unlock, Ogres and Tomb Kings.

As your blasting through your chosen level a score is being generated based on the distance traveled, tokens collected during the level and of course kills.

The only control you have over the Doomwheel is the ability to jump, either once by tapping the screen or by double jumping by tapping a second time whilst in mid-air. You’ll need to use these to avoid failing objects, ledges and gaps and to grab some high kills and tokens.

The absolute best bit about Doomwheel is the graphical style and the level of Skaven goodness in the title. The written language of our favourite Ratfolk can be found throughout, whilst the animation and drawn styling really suits the Skaven.

I love the ‘comic-ness’ of the Skaven and this game oozes character. Yes-Yes!!!!

Tokens collected as you play can be used to unlock upgrades, or you can choose to buy Warp tokens via in-app purchasing.

During my time playing the game, whilst some online reviewers seem to have suffered some crashes, I had no issues. At no point did I encounter a game crash or bug, so it’s clear the developers have been working on ensuring the game is as polished as it can be post-launch.

This is however, when all is said and done, an endless runner without much in the manner of variation. Everytime you replay a mission it’s layout changes, which is great, but once you’ve played through them a number of times you soon start to look out for the same things. After a few hours of playing the replayability really starts diminish sadly.

Whilst you can upgrade your wheel and unlock new enemies, apart from tugging on the lore that we love from the worlds of Warhammer the gameplay simply doesn’t change or offer enough variety to keep you playing until completion.

If you’re on the lookout for a fun, quick and enjoyable game this is definitely for you, even if you have no interest in the Skaven or Warhammer in general, but don’t expect Doomwheel to keep you gaming for hours on end.

Doomwheel is available as a free download on the App Store or Google Play. Version reviewed was on iOS. Doomwheel was originally released in 2017.

  1. I also had a crack at doom wheel but I’m not easy to please with a mobile game. I only have 1 on my phone that has lasted more than a few weeks, most don’t last a few hours 😂

Doomwheel was one of the latter. I would love to find a fun little AoS/40k game for my phone to kill the time when required but most seem to fall short (I only look for the free ones though). Have you tried Warhammer 40,000: freeblade? That was the one I liked the longest before getting bored.
